Beachbody’s New Workout – BODY BEAST

Beachbody is getting ready to step into a home fitness area I’ve been looking for – MAXIMUM MUSCLE GAIN!  Body Beast is a new at home fitness program that is being developed by Beachbody and Sagi Kalev.  The goal is the train you on Building Muscles and improving your health.

Shakeology Cleanse Review

Coming out of the holidays and continuing into the winter I realized my diet has not been the best. Realizing that summer is coming up quickly, I decided to reset my system by doing a Shakeology 3 day cleanse. I drink Shakeology everyday religiously, but I wanted to do a quick purge and thought this might be a good way.

In the past I have tried fasting as well as the Master Cleanse (Lemonade diet). I’ve also done the 2 day fast that Beachbody offer as well but in comparison to all of those this was the most enjoyable experience out of all.

The essence of the cleanse is such –

  • Drink Shakeology 3 times a day with only water and ice – Breakfast , Lunch and a snack between Lunch and dinner.
  • Eat a piece of fruit as a snack between Breakfast and Lunch.

Tai Cheng – Beachbody’s Tai Chi Now Available

The more I’ve read about Tai Cheng, the more interested I am. I don’t think my form is the best during my usual workouts and the idea of being able to have better control of my body is intriguing. My ambitious plan is to use this in the morning for the full 13 weeks while in the afternoons I continue my usual training. I’ve also realized my body recuperates a little differently at 40 versus 30 so maybe this will help with some rehabilitation.

Shaun T’s Deluxe Upper Body Weight Training Review

So I just finished doing Shaun T’s Insanity Upper Body Weight Training and I’m left wondering – What just happened to me? How can I be this exhausted and drenched just from lifting weights?

Usually when I lift weights, it’s do a rep, rest, do another rep, rest and it usually goes on like that for an hour. Shaun T has decided that the rest is overrated and I think he gives you a generous 5-6 minutes total in the 47 min workout.

After a ‘Warm-Up”, you will progress through 4 exercise segments which you repeat 3 times for reps of 12, 10, 8. The sequence of exercise’s in Upper Body Weight Training are –

In all seriousness Upper Body Weight Training is a great lifting program. It’s pacing fits right in with Insanity and is a great compliment to that if you want to add it in 2-3 times a week. You not only get a lifting workout, but by the time it is over you know you burned a lot of calories and squeezed your cardio in as well.

Unlike the other Insanity programs, you will need some dumbells and a bench to get the most out of this workout. I highly recommend this and both of the other DVD’s in the deluxe package. The added variety will help you push play that much longer.

Shaun T’s Insanity Review – Dig Deeper

You really have to question yourself when you knowingly decide to tackle a workout program named Insanity. I’m a P90X graduate and like to think I’m in pretty good shape, but the first time I tackled Shaun T’s Insanity, my body was in for a rude awakening.

Insanity is a 60-day at home extreme workout. It focuses on total body conditioning using the principle of Max Interval Training. The technical explanation of that is doing long burst of intense activity followed by short rest periods. A lot of traditional training are the opposite where they do short bust of intense exercise or longer but at a moderate pace. This is then broken up by long recovery periods. The technical explanation is fine, but all it really means is that you will work hard, sweat and curse Shaun T at certain times. I think the longest rest period you receive is 30 seconds. In some parts of the program, you don’t even get a break until after 20 minutes.

One of the great appeals to Insanity is that you don’t need any equipment. Your body, workout shoes and water are all you need. You also don’t need a tremendous amount of space. I travel a lot and I can do Insanity in most hotel rooms off my laptop.

As I mentioned, Insanity is designed for 60 days. Below is a brief description of the DVD’s –

The first month is designed to get your body use to the pace and intensity of Insanity. The workouts are about 45 minutes in month 1 and they really challenge you. You then get 1 week of recovery that consists of less intense workouts and stretching type programs to help your muscles recover. At the end of Month 1 I felt very accomplished and proud of the progress I made. I recommend you enjoy that feeling during the recovery week because Month 2 is no joke. The workouts crank up to under an hour and there is no mercy. I actually felt like I was starting over again. Now don’t let this discourage you. If you are going to invest money in a program, it’s great to know that you can find another set of challenges in the 2nd month.

Shaun T is great as a motivator and instructor. He is constantly encouraging you through the various exercises and he has an in your face approach. His timing is excellent because he seems to know just when you want to take a break and he pushes you through. Another great feature with the DVD’s is the presentation. Shaun T is basically leading a group of people through the program. It’s refreshing to see that some of the people have to take breaks and rest to make it through. It let’s you know we are all human.

I have to admit that Insanity is one of my favorite at home exercise programs. If you like intense challenging programs, look no further. This will challenge you physically and mentally. Remember the phrase DIG DEEPER! You will be doing that for 60 days.

A Graduate’s Review of P90X

P90X is a home based fitness program created by Tony Horton and Beachbody that challenges you to commit to 90 days of workouts and nutrition. The promise for that commitment is you will emerge with a fitter body, increased endurance and flexibility. By now I’m sure you’ve seen the infomercials and have wondered – Does it really work? The answer is yes and no. I’ll explain what I mean a little later.

P90X works on the principle of “muscle confusion”. Basically if you do the same workout routines month after month, you will eventually plateau because your muscles become use to the exercises. The beauty of this program is the variety in workouts. This variety is designed to confuse your muscles and avoid plateaus.

Here is a brief description of the workouts–

By Month 3 forget muscle confusion, your muscles are in bewilderment!

Equipment I use –

  • Variety of Dumbbells for the resistance programs
  • Pull-Up bar for back exercises
  • Bands – You can use bands in place of dumbbells or a pull-up bar. Each video show a person using the bands versus other equipment.
  • Yoga Mat and Yoga Block – These are optional, but I find them helpful.

Time – The workouts are 50 – 90 minutes long 6 days a week for 90 days. I’ve heard from some people that this is a big time commitment and a negative factor. If you are serious about getting in shape, you will find a way to make this work. You might have to sacrifice some sleep or leisure time, but remember we are all given 24 hours a day. How you spend it is up to you.

Nutrition – P90X comes with a complete nutrition guide. It includes a daily meals you prepare yourself for maximum control of your diet. It also has a guide to the quantity and types of foods you consume daily if you are unable to follow a rigid daily meal plan. Finally it gives guidance for road warriors that hit restaurants on the types of meals to order. Shakeology is also a good product to drink while using P90X. It ensures your body gets all the vitamins and nutrients it needs while you are losing weight.

Support – With all Beachbody products, you have access to the free on-line Supergym . This is an area where you can log your workouts, track progress, visit message boards for support or find chat rooms. It is a great tool for accountability and additional motivation.

So does P90X work as advertised? The answer is yes with a big BUT. You have to be willing and determined to follow the program and push play every day. P90X is a tool to help you get the body you want, but it isn’t easy. It’s an extreme program that works you 6 days a week. This program works if you follow the instructions of showing up, pressing play and following the nutrition guide.

I’ve personally completed 2 full rounds of P90X over the years and I’ve also started and stopped on a few occasions. I believe it is one of the best home fitness programs on the market and it’s fun to do. Tony Horton is a riot and he keeps you engaged during the 90 days. The variety is staggering and if you are in any type of workout funk, this will pull you out of it.

Own Your Life – Start a Home Based Business

Own Your Life!

When I first heard the phrase “Own Your Life”, I wasn’t quite sure what it meant. I felt I did own it (after all it is my life). I was in a comfortable place with a good job and things felt on track. That all changed when I heard the question – Would you like to have better health with more time and money to do the things you would like to do? That question hit home because it spoke to having the time to do the things you enjoy in life with money not being the main concern. It also speaks to being at a point in life that you are healthy enough to enjoy that time.

A lot of us were taught to get good grades in school. Our parents told us “if you work hard and get good grades, you will be accepted into a good college”. Then you hopefully land a nice job with a company that you can grow with and move up the corporate ladder. That job will provide you steady income and security through your working years. After 40+ years, you comfortably retire and start living life.

This plan was OK in the age of the big companies that offered stability. Now we are in a technology age where information moves faster, jobs are automated or outsourced and companies are downsizing for efficiency. Stability is questionable and this plan is shaky. You don’t Own Your Life!

If you follow the plan above, you might land a job where you work 40-60 hours a week for someone else. Granted you get compensated for that time, but the company reaps the rewards of your efforts. You spend a lot of time at your job, working, commuting and missing out on all the joy around you. Once you finally hit retirement, you might have social security, a pension and 401K to live off of, but at 62 – 65 years old, are you in the best health and shape to finally enjoy all of the things you have missed for the past 40 years? Did you Own Your Life?

I may have just painted a bleak picture of what the majority of people do on a daily basis. I’m not trying to insult how anyone makes a living and I actually believe the majority of people are fine following the path above. There are also those that recognize the path and would like to get off, but they are not willing to jump outside of their comfort zone. This article is for those that are ready to make a change, willing to explore an alternate route and Own Your Life!
